A Snowy Owl,Bubo scandiacus, lifts her body nearly straight up off driftwood and into the air after spotting a vole in the grass nearby. During these stiff wing beats the owl keeps looking forward and sometimes the eyes appear through the wings, although one never sees this unless that action is stopped with a fast shutter speed. When the owls hunted from high perches they flew forward but when they hunted from low perches they offen used strong wingbeats to rise up quickly. (Washington)
